ASDE Membership Information October 27, 2008
Dear ASDE Member: As most of you may know, for the past two years ASDE has been exploring developing an affiliation with the American College of Dentists (ACD). This possibility has been explored with the thought that combining the expertise and resources of both organizations, would enable ASDE and ACD to enhance their scope, impact and visibility as leaders in advancing professional ethics in dentistry and dental education. After thoroughly exploring the benefits to both organizations of an affiliation, both Boards of Directors have approved moving forward with a trial integration period beginning this year. During the trial integration period, ASDE will function as a section of ACD. Before a formal integration of ASDE and ACD would be finalized, the ASDE Board of Directors would ask the entire ASDE membership for approval to proceed (through a vote of the membership), and would provide to the membership details about ASDE’s role as a part of ACD. At this time, we anticipate that this vote will take place in about a year. During the trial integration period, the Executive Board of ASDE has approved the following membership categories and dues structure: Associate Member: All members of ASDE who are not currently ACD members will become Associate Members of ACD, with full membership in the ASDE Section. This is a newly created membership category of the ACD that enables accommodation of all of our members in ACD. Associate members will pay Section dues to ASDE (the usual $95 dues) and annual dues to ACD ($40). The $40 ACD annual dues cover subscriptions to the JACD ($20) and the ACD newsletter ($10), and a fee to cover administrative costs ($10). Therefore, the total dues for associate members will be $135 annually, which represents an increase of $20 over last year’s dues for ASDE membership including JACD ($115). ASDE members who are active members of ACD: These ASDE members will billed using their geographic Section as their primary Section and ASDE as their secondary Section unless the member requests that ASDE be their primary Section. Active Members who belong to ASDE will be paying dues to two Sections, but this does not change their total cost from previous years. ACD Fellows belonging to the ASDE Section will be billed for their regular annual dues to the ACD and section dues for ASDE ($95), since their ACD annual dues already cover their subscription to JACD, the ACD newsletter, and the administrative fee. ASDE members who are honorary members of ACD: Honorary members of ACD will be billed with ASDE as their primary Section. Their geographic Section will be their secondary Section unless we are told by the individual to make the geographic Section primary. Honorary Fellows do not pay dues to their geographic Section, but will pay dues to the ASDE Section. Please note that the distinction of membership categories has been developed only for the purpose of assessing membership dues! For the purposes of member’s roles and functioning in ASDE, as a “Special Section” of ACD, there is no distinction among membership categories. All ASDE members have equal rights and privileges within the Section!
