Dr. Carlos Smith, a dually trained general dentist and ethicist, is the Associate Dean for Ethics and Community Engagement, Professor and Interim Chairperson of the Department of Dental Public Health and Policy at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. He serves as Immediate Past President of the American Society for Dental Ethics, as a member of the board of directors of the Academy for Professionalism in Health Care, and was the lone dentist on the CVS Health National Health Equity Advisory Board. Smith completed Clinical Pastoral Education at Duke Medical Center, with emphasis on providing care and crisis management to families of cardiac pediatric patients. Armed with degrees from Hampton University, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and Duke Divinity School, his scholarship and leadership continue to shape national conversations on justice, professionalism, ethical care
delivery, oral health workforce wellbeing, trust and the creation of optimal learning and clinical environments across the health professions. He has been awarded over $1 million in federal funding for faculty success initiatives. See more of his scholarship here.
